Over Nelissen R&D
Nelissen R&D was founded in 1999 by Dr. Peter Ph. Nelissen, working as a criminologist/jurist, teacher, consultant in the field of art education in prisons, and visual artist. Since 2014, the activities have also been expanded abroad for services as a (short-term) international consultant for the Council of Europe (Strasbourg). Numerous projects were carried out in the context of strengthening democracy and the rule of law (prison system and probation) in countries of the Western Balkans (Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania), Romania (Norway Grants), Georgia and Ukraine.
The working methods and services of Nelissen R&D derive their added value and impact from a strong anchoring in both theoretical and empirical science (criminology, penology, criminal law and policy science, methods and techniques) and in-depth knowledge of daily implementation practice. Implementation of research projects in collaboration with universities and colleges is also part of the working method of Nelissen R&D.
Nelissen R&D also works from the knowledge that the intentions of many government policies and interventions are good, but that the results can also be disappointing. Sometimes there are even undesirable effects of policies and interventions. Nelissen R&D has a lot of experience in opening the black box of interventions and clarifying both effective mechanisms and unintended effects.
These and other topics, such as the relationship between scientific knowledge and policy, clarification of the problem definition and/or official/implicit policy objectives, the (in)direct effects of interventions, the choice of suitable quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods (e.g. Experience Sampling Method, mission-based evaluation, subgroup and statistical power analysis) and the practical applicability of policy recommendations are part of every research and advisory process. Nelissen R&D publishes in research reports, books and scientific articles in (inter)national professional journals and gives lectures on the research results.
The many years of work experience of Dr. Peter Ph. Nelissen as a researcher of the criminal justice chain and teacher, consultant/advisor in the prison system also ensure that the services are firmly anchored in daily practice.
